Nach seiner aktiven Zeit als Spieler hielt Chamberlain seinen hohen Fitnesszustand aufrecht.
Chamberlain nahm 60 Athleten unter Vertrag und plante, auf 100 aufzustocken. W?hrend er 1982 aktiv f¨¹r den Sport warb, sagte Chamberlain, er erw?ge, in die Leichtathletik der Masters zur¨¹ckzukehren; er sagte, er sei nur einmal im Hochsprung vom Olympiasieger Charles Dumas geschlagen worden und im Kugelsto?en sei er nie besiegt worden, als er den Olympiasieger im Kugelsto?en, Al Oerter, besiegte.
Er erzielte in dieser Saison auch einen NBA-Rekord von 0,727 und ¨¹bertraf damit seinen eigenen Rekord von 0,683 aus der Saison 1966-67. F¨¹r Spiel 5 wurden Chamberlains Arme in dicke Polster gepackt, die normalerweise von Defensivspielern im Football verwendet werden; ihm wurde eine schmerzstillende Spritze angeboten, die er jedoch ablehnte, weil er bef¨¹rchtete, er k?nnte seinen Schusskontakt verlieren, wenn seine H?nde taub w¨¹rden. In Spiel 4 wurden die unterbesetzten Lakers von den Knicks besiegt.
Die NBA-Saison 1972-73 war Chamberlains letzte; die Lakers verloren an Sub–tanz ¨C Happy Hairston war verletzt, Robinson und LeRoy Ellis hatten das Team verlassen und West k?mpfte mit Verletzungen. In Spiel 5 hatten die tapferen, aber verletzten West und Hairston schlechte Spiele und die Lakers verloren das Spiel 102-93 und die Serie 4-1, obwohl Chamberlain 23 Punkte erzielte und 21 Rebounds holte.
